INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis football team celebrated Homecoming with a 26-13 win against visiting Truman State University Saturday night. The Greyhounds (4-1, 2-0 GLVC) ran off 24 unanswered points, including a 17-point third quarter, to move to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
UIndy got touchdowns from
Reece Horn,
Andrew Walker and
Shakir Paschall on the night, with the latter two combining for 156 rushing yards. Junior linebacker
Derrick Bryant led all players with a career-high 15 tackles.
In a low-scoring first half, sophomore
Brad Schickel produced a pair of near-perfect punts in the early going, pinning the Bulldogs at their own two-yard line on both occasions. His first boot led to a Greyhound safety, as senior captain
Lee Campbell exploded into the Truman backfield to stuff a rush attempt and give UIndy a 2-0 initial lead.
The Bulldogs (1-4, 1-2) struck back early in the second quarter with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Randy Schroeder to Joey Schenck. It marked the start of a big night statistically for Schenck, who finished with 10 receptions for 107 yards.
After six straight punts to start the game, the UIndy offense finally got going late in the second quarter. The Hounds moved the ball 58 yards on eight plays to find the end zone and retake the lead with just over a minute to go in the half. The drive was punctuated when quarterback
Connor Barthel found Horn in the flat for the three-yard TD, his fifth of the season and 28th of his career.
UIndy carried that momentum through halftime and into the third quarter. The Hounds received the second-half kickoff and needed just 2:32 to score another touchdown. A 23-yard catch-and-throw to Horn set up and a 28-yard scoring rumble by Walker. Walker's fifth touchdown of the year came on an impressive run that included three broken tackles by the Chicago native.
On the ensuing Bulldog drive, UIndy forced the first and only turnover of the night when sophomore safety
Aeneas White earned his second interception of the season. His 19-yard return plus an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty gave the Hounds the ball at the Truman 39. UIndy would use the great field position to tack on a 26-yard field goal by Schickel, making 19-6.
After another Truman punt, the Hounds scored again, this time on a goal-line plunge by Paschall. His TD made it a 20-point game and capped a string of four consecutive scoring possessions for the home team.
The 'Dogs would later manage the game's only fourth-quarter score on a one-yard rush by Schroeder. The result made it a two-score game with 11:28 to play, but Truman would muster just one more first down the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Paschall's rushing efforts would help salt away the clock, including all of the final four minutes.
The Greyhounds hit the road next week for a first-place showdown at McKendree Saturday Oct. 10. Both teams are undefeated in conference play after McKendree's 38-13 rout of Southwest Baptist today.
Notes: The Greyhounds have won five consecutive Homecoming dates and 11 of their last 12 … UIndy's initial score marked the first safety for the Hounds since November of 2013 in a 33-7 home win versus Quincy.Â
