Men's soccer advances to conference final with 1-0 win

INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Indianapolis men's soccer team advanced to the GLVC title match with a 1-0 win over the Missouri S&T Miners on Friday at Carroll Stadium at IUPUI.

The fourth-seeded Hounds took the lead over the eighth-seeded Miners in the 25th minute off a Javier Steinwascher goal, assisted by Benjamin Sierra. Goalkeeper Miles Palmer was tested a couple of times in the first half, but kept his net clean as the Hounds took a 1-0 lead to the break.

In the second half, both teams had plenty of opportunities. The Miners hit the post and the crossbar in the period, but Palmer continued to keep everything out. The Hounds almost doubled their lead a couple of times, but ultimately the one goal was enough for them to get the win.

The Miners outshot the Hounds, 18-14, but Palmer saved all four of the Miners' shots on goal and earned the clean sheet. The Hounds put six of their shots on frame.

Head coach John Higgins: "Delighted to get the win. Not our best performance of the season but I think a lot of that had to do with how Gabe set his S&T team up. Credit to him and them for a fantastic performance. We typically peak at the end of the season in terms of our soccer performance but it's just not quite happened for us this post season. We will keep working away and hopefully put it all together on Sunday."

The Hounds will return to Carroll Stadium on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. as they take on the seventh-seeded Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in the conference title match.
