Hounds notch conference win versus Quincy, 75-69

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's basketball team (4-10, 1-3 GLVC) opened 2018 by securing their first conference win of the season, besting visiting Quincy (4-9, 0-4) by a final score of 75-69 at Nicoson Hall Thursday night. Four Greyhounds finished in double figures, with senior Devin Ferguson's career-high 19 points leading the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds trailed by as much as eight in the second half, but a 10-2 run late in the third quarter gave the home team the lead. The rally featured three steals by UIndy, leading directly to lay-ups by Martha Burse, Alexa Bailey and Sarah Costello, respectively.

The contest saw four ties and five lead changes the rest of the way, but with 4:42 to go, the Greyhounds broke a 61-61 tie and didn't look back. Bailey drained a triple to up the margin – part of a game-sealing 12-3 surge. The Hounds hit all four free throw attempts in the final minute to help keep the Hawks at arm's length down the stretch.

Four Greyhounds finished in double figures, with Burse (17 points), Bailey (13) and Tina Negoescu (12) joining Ferguson in the category. Bailey grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists, while Burse added six steals to her Division II-leading season total.

After scoring 28 points in the first 20 minutes, the Greyhounds hung 47 on the board in the second half. Ferguson, Burse and Bailey each had at least 10 points in the second half alone.

HOUND BYTES
Head Coach Kristin Wodrich on her team's performance…
"I thought we got off to slow start but I was really proud of how they reacted to it. They took what we (the coaches) said and they executed down the stretch. They adjusted well to all the switching defenses that Quincy had, and I just thought they did a really nice job."

On getting big contributions from multiple players…
"It's huge because you have to have other people in double figures. You have to have three or four, and tonight we had four which was huge. Devin came up big when we needed her, and Tina's number was called tonight and she hit some big shots for us, so I was just really proud pf them, being able to do that for us. It's a team effort and you have to have the team playing together."

On the keys to success Saturday…
"I think the biggest thing is to have good rest tomorrow and a good film session. But just keep the energy and the effort that we had (tonight). Our sense of urgency was much better, and as long as we keep growing, it will be good."
