FLORENCE, Ala. – University of Indianapolis junior
Klay Fiechter was one of just 24 student-athletes named as a candidate for the Harlon Hill Trophy, awarded annually to the NCAA Division II Football Player of the Year. The list of candidates, which includes six players from each of the four D-II Super Regions, was announced Friday morning by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee.
The 24 initial candidates will be placed on regional ballots, with the top two players from each of the four regions advancing to the national ballot Nov. 17. Players are nominated and voted on by the sports information directors at the 168 NCAA Division II football-playing institutions.
Fiechter brings a hefty set of credentials to the upcoming regional vote. The junior running back and return man is tied for the Division II lead in scoring at 12 points per game. He also ranks highly in the national rankings in all-purpose yardage (2nd), punt return average (2nd) and rushing (7th). With one regular-season game still to play, Fiechter has already set new single-season school records for rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns, all-purpose yards and rushing yards.
He is just the sixth UIndy football player to be named a Harlon Hill candidate, including teammate and 2011 Hill candidate
Chris Mills. No Greyhound has advanced to become a finalist.
Fiechter and the Greyhounds (8-2, 7-0 GLVC) wrap up the regular season at Urbana (7-3, 5-2) Saturday. UIndy is looking for an outright conference title and a potential playoff spot with a win versus the Blue Knights.
