ST. CHARLES, Mo. – It was the dawning of a new era Saturday afternoon for the UIndy athletic department as the sport of lacrosse was introduced to the Greyhound community. With only bright things to come for a program in its infancy, the Greyhound women's lacrosse team got a glimpse into what they hope their future holds.
Taking on a Lindenwood (1-0) program entering the season ranked No. 3 in the country, the Greyhounds were in for a daunting first test.
Lindenwood is coming off a 19-2 2015 campaign which saw the Lions finish a perfect 6-0 in conference play en route to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season and conference titles. They lived up to the hype, handing the Greyhounds a 15-0 drubbing in the program opener.
As the only Division II lacrosse program in the state of Indiana, head coach
Jillian Howley certainly has plenty to sell moving forward. UIndy joins Notre Dame in South Bend as the only Division I or II schools to sponsor women's lacrosse.
Freshman
Irene Carlquist made seven saves in net for UIndy, as the Lions had the decisive advantage in the shots column, 30-2. Junior
Erika Mackenzie and sophomore
Anna Rulapaugh recorded the lone shots for the Hounds.
The Lions reached the ten goal mark 17 minutes into the first half, forcing a running clock the remainder of the game mandated by the new NCAA rule.
Sophie Buelow and Amanda Schimpke each tallied hat tricks for Lindenwood, while Allison Hurley and Hannah Doughty contributed three assists.
Indianapolis will cut the ribbon for their home opener at Key Stadium next Saturday against Urbana. Start time is set for 1 p.m..
