LEBANON, Ill. – Chalane Morrison tallied a career-high five goals, while
Hana Priddy added a hat trick of her own, but UIndy's season came to a close Tuesday in an 18-11 loss to McKendree in the GLIAC Tournament.
It's been quite some time since the Greyhounds hosted McKendree back on March 5 in the program's inaugural conference matchup. The two sides met twice in March, and the longtime GLVC foes renewed their rivalry Tuesday at Leemon Field for a GLIAC Quarterfinal bout.
McKendree (9-9, 7-6 GLIAC) defeated the Hounds in both of their regular season meetings, but a three-game losing streak to finish the year slid the Bearcats to the four seed. UIndy (6-12, 4-9 GLIAC) entered as the five seed, riding a four-game losing streak of its own.
Tuesday's game saw many similarities between the previous two matchups. The Bearcats jumped all over UIndy from the onslaught, scoring ten of the game's first 12 goals.
UIndy trailed by as many as 10-2 through the first 30 minutes, before consecutive goals from
Anna Rulapaugh,
Hannah Burczyk and
Chalane Morrison cut the Bearcat lead to five at half.
Whatever momentum the Hounds gained from the late scoring spree quickly vanished after the break. Hannah Sugarman and Mia Fiore each netted goals just three minutes into the second frame for McKendree, pushing the lead back up to 12-5.
But, the Hounds wouldn't quit.
Morrison scored three straight goals to bring the McKendree lead to four, the closest the game had been since midway through the first half. She would finish with a career-best five scores and for the year, the junior led the Hounds with 44 goals, sixth most in the conference.
Hana Priddy then joined the fun, stringing together three consecutive goals of her own, and with ten minutes remaining the lead had dwindled to just two (13-11).
However, that would be as close as UIndy would get. McKendree reeled off three straight unanswered goals, putting the Greyhound comeback effort to rest.
For Indianapolis, the struggles to clear the ball from the defensive to offensive end continued Tuesday night. UIndy's season clearing percentage of .631 (173-274) for the season ranked last in the GLIAC, and they were right at that mark again, finishing the night 13-20 (.650) on clears.
The inaugural season for UIndy now comes to close. Picked to finish sixth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Poll, the Hounds finished the year with a 6-12 mark, and 4-9 record against GLIAC opponents, good for fifth in the conference.
