INDIANAPOLIS – Accolades poured in for the UIndy women's golf team Wednesday with the announcement of the Great Lakes Valley Conference year-end honors. The Greyhounds garnered all three major awards, including Player of the Year honors for
Pilar Echeverria, Freshman of the Year distinction for
Hunter Nugent and Coach of the Year laurels for
Brent Nicoson. Three other Hounds also earned All-GLVC laurels, including
Cailyn Henderson,
Anna Kramer and
Katelyn Skinner.
Â
After earning an unprecedented third Player of the Year nod from the league last season, Echeverria made history again with a fourth consecutive top golfer award this year. A Greyhound has now won the honor 12 times in the 22-year history of the award, including each of the last eight seasons.
Â
Echeverria had a number of impressive performances in this abbreviated season. The Guatemala City native broke her own school record with a jaw-dropping 71.6 season scoring average, placing first or second in five of six tournaments. She racked up three GLVC Player of the Week accolades to push her league record to 16 for her career.
Â
Echeverria is ranked No. 1 in the region by
Golfstat and No. 2 nationally. Her efforts will qualify for All-America status, while she is one of two finalists for National Player of the Year.
Â
Nugent, meanwhile, becomes UIndy's 10th GLVC Freshman of the Year and fifth in the past six years. The Oakville, Ontario, product averaged 76.3 strokes per round on the short season, earning runner-up honors in her first college tournament back in September and placing sixth at the more-recent Spring Fling in Southern California last month. She is the top-ranked freshman in the region and seventh-ranked rookie in all of Division II.
Â
In addition, Nicoson was chosen by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year for the fifth consecutive season and eighth time overall after leading the Hounds to team wins in all four DII events in which they competed. The ninth-year mentor guided five students-athletes to top-30 regional rankings; Henderson (5th in the region), Kramer (6th) and Skinner (14th) joined Echeverria and Nugent on the All-GLVC list, with Henderson earning her second all-conference nod.
Â
The league also recognized 16 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award nominees, with Echeverria earning the honor for UIndy. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced in May.
