INDIANAPOLIS – In the Greyhounds women's lacrosse program's inaugural game in February of 2016 was against the Lindenwood Lions – in Lindenwood's last game as a Division II member they would fall to the Hounds, 13-8, in the opening round of the Midwest Regional Tournament.
Head Coach
James Delaney and his pack of Hounds would chalk their names in Greyhound history on Key Stadium's turf on Friday morning, becoming the most winningest team and to go the furthest in the NCAA Championship Tournament in program history.
TAMING THE LIONS
Now having gone 3-0 against Lindenwood in the 2022 campaign, the Greyhounds would take an early lead over the Lions to kick off the opening game. Holding down the No. 1 seed in the Midwest, the Hounds took an early lead over the Lions with a five goal first quarter.
It was
Christina Sato who would draw blood first, with not even a minute of regulation competed, would net an unassisted goal to put the Hounds up early, followed by a rocket from the stick of
Abigail Lagos to put the Hounds up 2-0.
UIndy continued to push but the Lions also pushed back. The No. 4 seeded Lions would tie the game early in the third quarter, but after the break between the third and fourth quarter – it was all Hounds. The Greyhounds defense would shut down the Lions to zero goals in the fourth, notably by All-American, All-Region, and GLVC Defender of the Year
Kara Antonucci whose presence on the field would lock down the Lions best offensive players.
Abigail Lagos and
Peyton Romig would continue to prove their dominance with three goals each.
Christina Sato would score two of her own. Romig would post 11 draw controls, and five would be earned by
Mekayla Montgomery.
Cassidy King would take the win for the Hounds, taking the final 30 minutes in the net and posting four saves.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-UIndy would outshoot Lindenwood 28-23.
-Both teams would commit nine turnovers.
--UIndy would earn 18 draw controls to the Lions' six.
