James Delaney was officially named the second head coach in program history after the 2018 season, leading the Greyhounds to their first NCAA tournament berth in just the program's third season. 

Delaney led UIndy to its second straight NCAA Midwest regional appearance and GLIAC title in 2019, racking up an 18-2 record, including a perfect 12-0 mark in league play. The Greyhounds claimed the GLIAC regular season title before downing Grand Valley State in overtime to once again win the tournament crown.

The Greyhound attack has become one of the best in the country under Delaney, leading NCAA Division II in scoring offense and scoring margin this past spring. Three attackers, including one midfielder, were named IWLCA All-Region performers in 2019, with Destinie Katz being named the GLIAC Attacker of the Year. Seven primary goal scorers were recognized as All-GLIAC players, with Grace Gunneson joining Katz as the league's leading point-getter. 

Delaney was named the conference's coach of the year after leading the Greyhounds to an unblemished mark. In all, 10 players were named All-GLIAC, with Riley McClure claiming the Defender of the Year award and Cassidy King earning Goalkeeper and Freshman of the Year honors.

I know I speak for the entire team that we are eager to build off of the success we had in just our third season and will continue to prove people wrong that continue to doubt us. I am so humbled and grateful for the opportunity to continue the journey of building a national championship program here at UIndy."

Under his tutelage on the offensive end, the Greyhounds produced six attackers/midfielders on an all-GLIAC team and three on an all-region squad, including two first-teamers in Delaney Davidson and Lauryn Hardoy.

Prior to taking the head job, Delaney was the Hounds’ offensive coordinator in 2017, helping the second-year program finish 13-5 overall and 5-2 in the GLIAC, more than double its win total from 2016. Delaney mentored GLIAC Attacker of the Year, Chalane Morrison, as well as All-GLIAC second-teamer Anna Rulapaugh and Honorable Mention recipient Grace Gunneson.

The three helped UIndy score more than 14 goals per game, and each finished in the top 12 among GLIAC attackers in points. UIndy also set program records for goals in a 26-3 rout against Northern Michigan, and Morrison claimed both the goals (8) and points (11) single-game records in 2017.

Delaney, a 2013 graduate of Seton Hill University, came to the Circle City following a two-year stint as an assistant at GLIAC-rival Tiffin University. In his time with the Dragons, the Vancouver native helped direct the program to its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent – a 16-15 OT win over perennial GLIAC-power Grand Valley State in 2016. It was GVSU’s first conference loss in four-plus seasons.

Additionally, for the first time in program history Tiffin received votes in 2016 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll. Delaney helped mold attacker Emily Roussel, who tallied a conference-high 145 goals over two seasons. Her IWLCA All-America Second-Team nod in 2016 was just the second All-American honor in school history. The other came in the form of former goalie Jessica Bombard, who was a First Team All-American in 2015 under the tutelage of Delaney.

A three-time USILA All-American during his playing days, the former Seton Hill standout still ranks as the school’s all-time leading scorer from the Midfield position. Delaney was twice named the USILA Midfielder of the Year and captained the 2013 Griffin team that qualified for the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament. He was inducted into the Seton Hill Hall of Fame in July 2018.

After his time with the Griffins, Delaney was selected in the second round of the 2013 National Lacrosse League Draft by the Philadelphia Wings, and was later drafted by the Ohio Machine in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Draft.
