Former University of Indianapolis pitcher Jim Crowell (Valparaiso) is back in Major League Baseball after being called up from AAA Scranton/Wilkes Barre to the Philadelphia Phillies last week.
Crowell made his 2004 Phillies debut vs. the St. Louis Cardinals in the ninth inning last Thursday before a sellout crowd of 44,376 at the Phillies' new Citizens Bank Park. He pitched 1/3 of an inning in the Cardinals' 7-4 victory.
The 29-year-old southpaw had been 1-0 with an 0.75 earned run average with two saves in five appearances at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2004.
The 6'4, 225-pound Crowell made his Major League debut in 1997 with the Cincinnati Reds, appearing in two contests.
Crowell was a three-year letterman and two-year starter at UIndy from 1993-95. He threw a no-hitter against Bellarmine in 1995, finishing that season with a 5-5 record, 2.83 ERA, two shutouts, and 72 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings.
Crowell finished second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in strikeouts per nine innings (10.4) as a sophomore in 1994, fanning 58 batters in 50 innings.
