WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- The Greyhound swimming and diving teams opened their 2006-07 schedule at the Indiana Intercollegiate Invite, hosted by Purdue University at Boilermaker Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon. Several top finishes highlighted the first event of the season.
Sophomore Marios Panagi won the 50-yard freestyle, touching in 21.49 seconds. Alex Arestis earned third place in the event, clocking a 21.76 time. Panagi later took runner-up in the 100 backstroke with his 52.73 time. Arestis took fourth in the 100 free with his 47.56 time.
Panagi was part of the 200-yard medley relay that took second, along with James Landis, Jeremy Lindauer and Dylan Nitzkorski. Lindauer broke 2:00 in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing in fifth place (1:59.87).
Isabela Tafur raced out to a 24.61 time in the 50-yard freestyle in the freshman's first collegiate meet. Holly Spohr was close behind, touching in 24.87 to finish in fifth place. Tafur and Spohr also finished in the top six in the 100 freestyle, as Tafur went 53.46 and Spohr clocked a 54.30 time for the Greyhounds.
Valerie Crosby recorded a 59.40 time in the 100-yard butterfly, good for a sixth place showing. Alison Smith finished the 100 backstroke in 1:00.31, taking fifth place. Ellie Miller was fourth in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 5:07.50.
The Greyhound men finished in second as a team, earning 256 points and besting all but host Purdue. The UIndy women finished behind Purdue and Ball State, taking third place in the first meet of the season. Indianapolis will next compete in three weeks, hosting Ashland University to commence the conference season.
