Volleyballers close regular season on win streak

QUINCY, Ill. – With help from a three-game victory at host Quincy on Saturday, the University of Indianapolis (23-9, 11-5 GLVC) has built some momentum heading into next week’s conference tournament.  By defeating the Lady Hawks 30-27, 30-25 and 30-25, the Hounds have put together a three-match win streak, their fifth run of at least three victories this season.

The visiting Hounds controlled the early goings of the opening game, building a 14-9 lead to force the hosts to call a timeout.  Quincy responded by battling to a 20-20 tie. Later, with the score knotted at 27, the Greyhounds ran off three straight points to take game one, two of which came on Quincy attack errors.

The Greyhounds again started quickly in the second game, jumping out to a 12-5 lead before the Lady Hawks asked for time.  The stoppage did not work in their favor this time, however, as they would get no closer than four points in the race to 30.

In the final game, the score remained close and was eventually tied at 18 all.  Indianapolis would pull away at that point, scoring seven straight on its way to the three-game sweep.

Junior Casey Chrzastowski led the way offensively for the Hounds, scoring 17.5 points on five block assists and a match-high 15 kills.  Beth Robbins and Brandi McAllister split the setting duties, tallying 43 assists and 16 digs between them.  Freshman Jessica Breeden recorded nine kills on .400 hitting while blocking a season-best six attack attempts.

With eleven conference wins, UIndy matched last season’s total.  The 2005 Greyhounds grabbed the fifth seed in the GLVC tourney and advanced all the way to the final game.  Coach Butera’s squads have made appearances in the semifinal round each of the last four years.

The Hounds earned the fourth seed in the upcoming GLVC tourney and will face the five-seeded Northern Kentucky Norse on Thursday, Nov. 2.
