QUINCY, Ill.- The University of Indianapolis women's soccer team secured its first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference title with a 1-0 win over Bellarmine University in Sunday's league championship match. Freshman Amanda Reese tallied an early goal and the Greyhound defense made it hold up as the school celebrated its first GLVC women's soccer title.
Reese's goal came in the ninth minute when Sarah Jones crossed a ball into the box and Reese hammered it home for a 1-0 UIndy lead. Also garnering an assist on the play was freshman Ashley Seehase, who upped her team-leading point total to 25 on the season.
Even with the lead, the Greyhounds continued to apply constant pressure, firing 14 shots at Bellarmine keeper Rebekah Westendorf, 11 of those in the first half alone. Ten of the 14 shots were on goal with Seehase and Reese registering four and three shots on net, repsectively, for the Hounds' offense.
UIndy's defense recorded its 12th shutout of the year, its fourth consecutive blanking. Abby Tracy made four saves to tie the UIndy record for individual shutouts in a season with 10. The win avenged an earlier 2-1 loss to BU (Sep. 3 in Louisville, Ky.).
Indianapolis (16-4-1) is poised to also make its first NCAA tournament with the 32-team field set to be announced on Monday afternoon. Four teams from each of eight regions are selected via committee for the field. The Greyhounds were ranked No. 6 in the Great Lakes Region in the last regional rankings (Oct. 22).
