INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- DeAndre Brock's buzzer-beating shot provided the final margin as the Greyhounds beat visiting Brescia (Ky.), 56-54, in the team's season opener at Nicoson Hall on Wednesday night. With the score tied in the final seconds, Brock rattled in a jumper to give the Greyhounds the win in the opener.
The Greyhounds had to mix up their lineup early as Justin Barnard was whistled for two quick fouls in the first minute of the game. Sophomore Braxton Mills came in and took advantage, scoring four quick points, helping UIndy to a 14-6 lead eight minutes in. Brescia would close the gap and eventually regain the lead with 7:25 to play in the first half on Nate Meinhart's triple.
UIndy would storm to a 19-4 run late in the opening stanza, however, to give the Greyhounds a 36-26 cushion at the break. Brock poured in a dozen in the opening frame and Reed Ludlow added eight for the Hounds.
The Bearcats immediately knifed into the Greyhound lead, scoring the first eight points of the second half to bring the score within a bucket, 36-34. UIndy held a slim advantage until five straight points from Matt West gave Bresica a 45-44 lead. Tyke Cockerham finished a running one-hander off-the-glass, regaining the Greyhound lead at 46-45 with just over seven minutes left. Mills added a putback and a free throw to make it a four-point UIndy margin.
With the score 54-53 in favor of the home team, Brescia's Brad Lachenmayr drew a foul and an opportunity to put the Bearcats back in front. His first free throw rolled around and in but the second caromed off giving UIndy one final possession. Brock dribbled in the paint, shook off a defender and hoisted a shot that bounced off the rim but fell as the horn sounded to give UIndy the exciting win.
Brock finished with a game-high 19 points, including three triples. Mills added 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go along with seven rebounds.
Indianapolis (1-0) will host Hillsdale on Tuesday, Nov. 21 in an in-region battle. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Nicoson Hall.
