Strong second-half shooting propels Hillsdale to 83-70 win

Box score

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Hillsdale College shot 69.4 percent from the floor in the second half to take an 83-70 win over host Indianapolis at Nicoson Hall on Tuesday night.  The Chargers knocked down 5-of-7 triples in the second frame to earn the win.

UIndy (1-1) held a slim lead through most of the first half, extending the lead to as many as six with 4:41 remaining.  Hillsdale (2-0) countered with seven straight points to take the lead at 28-27.  The teams headed to the locker room tied at 31-31.

The Chargers went on a 13-2 run to open the second stanza before Tyke Cockerham's layup stopped the bleeding.  DeAndre Brock followed with a triple and drew an offensive foul on the ensuing possession to slice the Hillsdale lead to eight.

Tim Homan was a thorn in UIndy's side, burying six of his first seven three-point attempts.  But a layup and a thunderous dunk by James Thompkins forced Hillsdale to take a timeout as momentum looked to be shifting.  He later buried a triple, making it a five-point game.

Homan's seventh longball of the night extended the Charger lead back to a dozen with just under six minutes remaining.    Braxton Mills sprang free on the baseline a few moments later and threw down a one-handed jam for a 65-55 Hillsdale advantage.

With just over a minute to play, a pair of Thompkins free throw makes followed by a Cockerham steal and bucket made things interesting at 76-68, but the Chargers allowed it to get no closer and finished off the win by a 83-70 score.

Homan led all players with 27 points on 11-of-13 shooting.  Thompkins led the Greyhounds with 22 points and two steals.  Mills added a game-high seven rebounds for UIndy.

The Greyhounds will be in action next Thursday, opening conference play in Missouri.  UIndy will battle Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday followed by Missouri-Rolla on Saturday.
