Comeback falls short at WSU, 73-65

DETROIT, Mich.-  Wayne State's Joe Carr scored a game-high 28 points to lead the host Warriors to a 73-65 win over the University of Indianapolis in men's basketball action on Thursday night.  The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds allowed WSU to build a hefty lead in the first half, thanks in part to just 28.6 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes.  Conversely, the Warriors buried 62.5 percent of their shots to mount a 38-22 lead at the break.

UIndy (5-3, 2-1 GLVC) went to work on its comeback attempt right away in the second frame, scoring the first seven points to shave the lead to single digits, 40-29.  DeAndre Brock scored the first 10 Greyhound points in the second half, and later helped slice the lead to four midway through the half.  After he knocked down a long-range shot, Jordan Barnard followed with a three of his own and the Warrior lead was just 49-45.

That lead would dwindle to just one with just over four minutes remaining, but the Hounds never fully recovered from the once 18-point margin.  Carr was a thorn in the side of Indianapolis as he connected on 5-of-6 from three point range while his backcourt mate, Kris Krzyminski, added 20 points.

The Hounds would not rollover, however, as Tristan Rogers hammered home a thunderous dunk, cutting the advantage to five in the final 1:10.  But, the comeback fell short as WSU hit 4-of-6 free throws in the final minute to ice it.

Brock led the Hounds' offense with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting.  Justin Barnard added 11 and Myron Jackson chipped-in 10 for Indianapolis.   The Greyhounds were outrebounded, 41-26, for the game.

The Hounds will spend the balance of 2006 in the Hawai'ian islands as they head out next week for a pair of games.  UIndy will take on Hawai'i Pacific and Chamindae on Dec. 29-30, respectively.
