Rogers leads UIndy past Kentucky Wesleyan

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - A second half run helped fuel the Greyhounds in the second half as UIndy beat visiting Kentucky Wesleyan, 77-70, at Nicoson Hall on Thursday night.  The Hounds buried 15-of-26 shots in the second stanza en route to their first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season.

The Greyhounds used back-to-back triples by Justin Barnard and three Braxton Mills layups to get out to an early advantage.  One Greyhound possession saw two offensive rebounds for UIndy, capped by DeAndre Brock's layup for an 18-10 advantage, forcing a KWC timeout.

Barnard later connected on his third triple to push the Greyhound lead to 29-19 with eight minutes to play in the opening half.  The Panthers squashed the UIndy lead to a bucket, 36-34, heading into halftime.

In the second frame, the pace quickened with the teams trading baskets through the opening four minutes.  The Hounds began to pull away when Tristan Rogers mopped-up an offensive board and flushed it home for a 47-41 Greyhound advantage.  The Panthers responded, however, with nine straight points to take their first lead since the game's opening minutes.

KWC (4-2, 0-2 GLVC) led by as many as four until the Hounds unleashed a 14-4 run to help run their lead to 69-59.  The Panthers whittled away at the lead and trimmed it to three with just over a minute to play.  Rogers pushed it back to a five-point lead with his layup and Scott Strahm converted on two free throws to ice it.

Indianapolis (2-2, 1-1 GLVC) used a balanced scoring attack and a ferocious defensive effort (8 blocks) to garner the win.   Four Greyhounds were in double digits with 16 from Brock and James Thompkins and 14 apiece from Justin Barnard and Mills.  After being held scoreless in the first half, Rogers had a solid second half, scoring all eight of his points, grabbing four of his team-high seven rebounds while adding four assists and two blocks in the second frame alone.  Strahm added six assists in the win.

The Greyhounds will host #2 Southern Indiana on Saturday in a 3:00 p.m. tip at Nicoson Hall.  The game will be telecast on a tape-delayed basis.  The game can be seen on SkyTrak Weather, Comcast Local and HomeTown 19 among others.  Check this link for the replay times on Monday and Tuesday.
