INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. –  Indianapolis put the brakes on #2 Southern Indiana’s nine game winning streak with a 56-55 win at Nicoson Hall on Saturday afternoon.  Justin Barnard’s clutch free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining proved to be the difference, giving the Hounds the upset win in the regionally-televised contest.

The teams traded buckets to open the action, but USI rattled off 11 straight points to take command in the early going.  The Screaming Eagles held the Hounds scoreless for over five minutes to roll up a quick double-digit advantage.  But, the resilient Hounds squashed the rally and managed to keep the high-octane USI offense to just 22 first-half points.

The Eagles again got off to a quick start in the second stanza, scoring the first seven points en route to a 34-22 lead four minutes into the half.  With the score 38-25, UIndy went on its run, eventually tying the game.  The Greyhounds used the long ball to get back into the game.  Triples came from four different Hounds during the run, capped by Jordan Barnard’s three from the top of the key at the 9:36 mark to knot the score at 41-41.

UIndy took its first lead with under four minutes remaining on free throw makes from DeAndre Brock for a slim 49-48 Greyhound advantage.  USI briefly took a one-point lead but an offensive rebound by Justin Barnard helped create another opportunity.  With the shot clock winding down, Keith Radcliff fired a long range three that Barnard ran down to maintain possession.  Braxton Mills grabbed another offensive board in the series and scored, putting UIndy back in front, 54-53.

USI had the chance to play for the last shot, but opted to not run out the game clock as Kenny Page layed it in, leaving 20 seconds on the clock.   The Greyhounds went to Justin Barnard on the left baseline where he was fouled with 1.7 seconds remaining.  He converted on both charity stripe tosses to put the Hounds back on top.

A full-court heave was juggled and went out of bounds on the opposite baseline, leaving 0.7 seconds on the clock and one final chance for USI.  The Eagles got a great look, but Geoff Van Winkle’s layup attempt underneath trickled off the mark, earning the upset for UIndy.

Brock led the Greyhounds with 14 points while Justin Barnard added 11 in the winning effort.  Rashard Sullivan and Kenny Page each had 10 points to lead the way for USI.

Indianapolis (3-2, 2-1 GLVC) will host Saginaw Valley State on Sunday, December 17 at Nicoson Hall.  Tip off is slated for 3:00 p.m.

Notes: The last Greyhound win over a top two team in the nation came back on Jan. 8, 2004, when Rodney Rollins' layup put the Hounds on top for good and Cory Bennett's free throws iced it in the waning seconds, giving UIndy a  88-87 win over #1 USI ... With wins over Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday and Southern Indiana on Saturday, the 2006-07 team marked the first Greyhound team since the 1996-97 squad to beat both GLVC powers in the same season ... KWC and USI have been travel partners in the conference for many years and this weekend's sweep was the first by a UIndy team since Bill Green's team turned the trick on Feb. 23 and 25, 1989 ... The Greyhounds held USI to just 55 points on the night, the Eagles' fewest since the 2001 season ... The game was televised and will be shown throughout the Hoosier state on Monday and Tuesday.  Click here for channels and times.
