Volleyball returns to its winning ways

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After a slight hiccup, the University of Indianapolis volleyball squad got back on track Tuesday night, as it defeated intrastate rival Saint Joseph’s College at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.  The Hounds recently ended a season-high six-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon but returned to the win column in convincing fashion with a three-game sweep (30-22, 30-18, 31-29).

The Greyhounds received little trouble from the visiting Pumas in the first two games, closing out the respective contests with runs of 9-3 and 11-6.  The third game, however, turned into a barn-burner that contained 14 ties, the last of which came at 29-29.  The Hounds had Saint Joseph’s on the ropes after an Ashley Fallos ace put the home team up 29-26.  The Pumas rallied to tie it but the Greyhounds would score the next two points, including a Cassie Schott kill for the win.

With their normally deadly attack struggling to find the floor, the Hounds defense shined by holding the visitors to a mere .085 hitting percentage.  UIndy managed to shovel 61 digs on the match, its second highest three-game total on the season.  Freshman libero Kyleigh Turner scooped a game-high 19 and Fallos added 10.

The Greyhounds (12-4, 4-1 GLVC) begin a three-match stint on the road as they travel to Highland Heights, Ky. to battle the Northern Kentucky Norse on Friday, Sep. 22.  The NKU squad features reining GLVC Player of the Week Liz Holmes.  Game time is scheduled for 7 pm.
