INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Visiting Lewis University escaped with a 3-1 (31-33, 32-30, 30-27, 30-22) win over UIndy in Great Lakes Valley Conference volleyball action at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center on Saturday afternoon. After dropping a close first game, the Flyers slipped past the Hounds in each successive game.
The Greyhounds rebounded from a sluggish start to mount a 14-7 lead early on. Ashley Fallos held serve for six straight points during the run, boosting the Hounds to an early advantage. With the score 27-20 in favor of UIndy, Lewis stormed back, and eventually took a 31-30 lead. But, three straight Greyhound points gave the game to the Greyhounds, finished on a rare kill from defensive specialist Kyleigh Turner.
In the second game, Indianapolis got off to a 5-1 start and led throughout until an attack error broke a 29-29 tie and gave Lewis a one-point advantage. A kill by Elizabeth Shuyler followed, but UIndy could not hang on, dropping the second game, 32-30 to tie the match at that point.
In game three, Lewis took control of the game midway through the action with five straight points at one point to erase a slim UIndy lead. Lewis would not look back in that game, closing out a 30-27 win.
In the fourth game, the Flyers took advantage of Greyhound miscues and lept way out in front, 17-5. The Hounds trimmed the margin to six but got no closer and dropped just their second match in their last 13 contests.
Lewis' Charisse Steckling led all players with 25 kills for the match. Lauren Hatter added 30 digs for the Flyers.
For Indianapolis (16-5, 7-2 GLVC), Lynne Ross and Casey Chrzastowski each had 14 kills to lead the offense. Ross added seven total blocks to boost her career total over the 500 mark (505). Turner led the Greyhounds with 20 digs.
UIndy will look to regroup and will finish off its homestand with a Tuesday night non-conference match against Taylor University. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
