INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The Greyhound men's basketball team took out its second top 10 team of the season, besting #9 Quincy, 68-63 at Nicoson Hall on Thursday night. The Hounds beat then-#2 Southern Indiana, 56-55, back on Dec. 9. The last time UIndy defeated two top-ten teams was back in 1996-97, when the Hounds were 3-0 against DII top 10 teams.
UIndy (9-6, 5-3 GLVC) jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead on a DeAndre Brock triple and a pair of dunks by Braxton Mills. The Hawks would then rattle-off 10 straight points and would eventually build an 11-point advantage.
The Hounds whittled the lead to six at the break and used the opening minutes of the second stanza to retake the lead for the first time since the beginning stages of the game. Seven straight points keyed the run, accentuated by Tyke Cockerham's fastbreak layup to put UIndy on top, 47-41.
Quincy (14-3, 7-2 GLVC) battled back to take a 52-21 advantage, but Keith Radcliff answered with a three-pointer and the Hounds retook a two-point cushion. The teams battled as the lead changed hands on each of the next three possessions.
Brock's up-and-under layup with 2:00 left gave the Hounds a 59-58 lead. The biggest play of the game may have come on the next Greyhound possession when Mills threw down a one-handed dunk off Scott Strahm's missed layup to push the advantage to three with 1:14 left.
With the Hounds clinging to a slim single-point margin and :34 remaining, UIndy went to Radcliff on the in-bounds pass and he was promptly fouled. The sophomore calmly knocked down the first of a one-and-one and the Greyhounds maintained control after he missed the second. Brock put the game out of reach with a pair of freebies, putting UIndy up, 64-60.
Solid free throw shooting helped the Hounds to victory as UIndy made good on 7-of-8 in the final minute. Brock had four of the makes, going a perfect 7-for-7 for the night.
Brock led all scorers with 25 points, adding four rebounds and three assists. Mills chipped-in 15 points and two blocks. Myron Jackson tallied three steals in 12 minutes of action.
The Greyhounds will host SIU Edwardsville on Saturday. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. from Nicoson Hall.
Notes: UIndy tallied 44 second-half points, the second straight game with that many in the second frame (ties season high) ... There were 11 lead changes and three ties in the contest ... Brock's 25 points were the most by a Greyhound this season and were a UIndy career-high for the junior transfer.
