RENSSELAER, Ind.- A three-pointer in the closing seconds of overtime sent the Greyhound men's basketball team to a 64-61 loss at the hands of host Saint Joseph's on Saturday night. With the win, the Pumas wrestled away sole possession of the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division, improving to 3-1 in league play and leveling UIndy's record at 2-2.
With a one-point UIndy lead, Devin Thomas hit a three-pointer with 1.6 remaining in overtime to give SJC the lead. Following a free throw, DeAndre Brock was able to get off a desperation three-pointer, but his half-court shot caromed off the backboard and SJC escaped with the win.
The game started sluggishly as the team's combined to hit just 2-of-12 combined in the game's opening five minutes. For the half, UIndy hit just 29.0 percent of its shots, but SJC did not fair much better, connecting on 29.4 percent of its field goal attempts.
UIndy (6-5, 2-2 GLVC) trailed by as many as 11 in the second half, but fought all the way back to tie the score at 40-40 on back-to-back field goals by Tristan Rogers. A Brock layup gave the Hounds their first lead of the second stanza. The Greyhound lead would build to as many as five, but SJC battled to regain the advantage and eventually go up by three with :41 remaining.
Down 57-54 in regulation, Scott Strahm hit a long three-pointer to pull the score even and send the game into extra minutes.
In overtime and the score tied at 59-59 with a minute to play, Justin Barnard hit a fadeaway to give the Hounds a two-point lead. A free throw make from Jonathan Pittman and a rebound that UIndy could not control on the second free throw set-up Thomas' heroics.
Brock led the Hounds in scoring with a dozen, the ninth straight game that he has been UIndy's top scorer. Justin Barnard added nine points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
The Greyhounds continue their eight-game road swing on Monday as they head to the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The game is a rescheduled contest from Nov. 30.
