ALLENDALE, Mich. – The third-seeded University of Indianapolis volleyball team picked-up the program’s first ever NCAA win on Thursday. The Hounds defeated the sixth-seeded Hillsdale Chargers in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA DII Great Lakes Regional. The event is being hosted Thursday through Saturday by top-seeded Grand Valley State at GSVU Fieldhouse in Allendale, Mich.
Game one remained close though the early going. Just after a 15-15 score marked the seventh tie of the frame, the Hounds ran off four straight points to seize control. At 22-19, UIndy remained three points up but the Chargers managed an 11-2 run to finish the game and go up 1-0.
The Greyhounds rebounded with a .340 team hitting percentage in game two and never trailed on their way to knotting the match at one apiece. Senior
Casey Chrzastowski accounted for a third of the Hounds points in the second by killing nine balls and adding a service ace.
UIndy controlled the third game as well. The Hounds led by as many as nine points and went on to take the game 30-24.
Indianapolis put Hillsdale away in the fourth and final game, but the Hounds needed more than 30 points to do so. A
Kyleigh Turner ace gave UIndy a 29-26 edge and put the pressure on the Chargers. Hillsdale delayed elimination by scoring three in a row. The schools were even again at 30, but a Charger attack error and a
Jessica Breeden kill sealed the Hounds’ first tournament win.
The match marked the first time this season that both the Greyhounds and their opponents amassed a team hitting percentage of over .290. UIndy edged the Chargers .293-.291 in that department.
Three Hounds hit for at least a .350 clip and compiled double-digit kill totals. Chrzastowski registered a .356 percentage with 20 kills, six digs and two aces. Freshman
Lyndsay Callahan recorded her team-leading 12th double-double with 19 kills and 19 digs. Breeden completed the trio with 10 kills and team-highs in hitting percentage (.375) and blocks (3).
In Friday's first semifinal, UIndy will face a familiar foe in Lewis University. The GLVC East Division-rivals have already faced each other three times, with the road team winning every game. Lewis has won the previous two meetings, including a sweep win in the conference tournament finals. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 pm.
