INDIANAPOLIS- Five different Greyhounds scored in double digits as the host Greyhounds downed Brescia University, 74-65, at Nicoson Hall Thursday night. A 21-3 run early in the second half helped the home team shake-off a pesky Brescia squad en route to the win.
The night got off to a good start as Tyke Cockerham had three layups in the early going, sparking UIndy (1-0) to a 10-3 advantage just three-and-a-half minutes in. Brescia would whittle the lead down to a bucket at 15-13 before UIndy strung seven straight points together to reopen a nine-point edge.
The Bearcats, behind solid three-point shooting from Andrew Howard, battled and eventually took a brief one-point lead just before halftime on Howard's third three-pointer of the opening frame. The Hounds got a jumper from DeAndre Brock in the closing seconds of the half to take a one-point cushion, 28-27, into the locker room.
In the second half, a dunk from Donald Cloutier was the catalyst of a span that saw UIndy outscore the visitors 21-3. Justin Barnard buried a pair of longballs from the corner in the run and Tristan Rogers' fastbreak layup stretched the lead to 19 and forced a timeout.
Brescia (2-3) again closed to within six points with under three minutes to play, but Greyhound layups on four straight possessions put the game away and gave UIndy its second straight season-opening win over BU.
Brock led UIndy with 16 points. Rogers added 13 with a team-high seven boards while Braxton Mills chipped-in 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Cockerham made all five of his shots from the floor for an 11-point night.
The Greyhounds take to the road for their next pair of games, playing at Hillsdale next Monday and at Saginaw Valley State on Wednesday.
