Brock's late triple makes Hounds winners at Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich.-  Despite trailing for most of the game, the Greyhound men's basketball team pulled out an exciting 78-76 win over host Hillsdale Monday night.  Senior DeAndre Brock's three-pointer in the final minutes provided the winning points to keep UIndy's record perfect at 2-0 on the young season.

Both teams got out to a frantic pace, with Hillsdale hitting on nine of its first 10 shots, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.  The Hounds made eight of their first 11, but found themselves quickly down by eight thanks to the Chargers hot shooting.  The Hillsdale lead would grow to as many as 10 in the first stanza.

Back-to-back triples by Tyler Kitchel and Brock, followed by a Braxton Mills layup trimmed the lead to a bucket at 28-26.  But, the Chargers roared back with seven straight of their own and marched into halftime leading 45-37.

Hillsdale center Tony Gugino hit on his first 6 shots and a pair of triples for 14 points in the first 10 minutes.  He finished the first half with 23 points, hitting on all eight of his shots.

HC (1-2) maintained control of the lead throughout the second half with the Hounds edging closer, but never got the equalizer until Brock hit a pair of freebies to knot the score at 73-73 with 4:22 to play.  Brock later gave the Hounds their first lead since the early going with his three-pointer for a 78-76 UIndy advantage and 1:46 showing on the clock.

After a missed jumper by Gugino, Tim Homan blocked a shot to give the ball back to Hillsdale with 33 seconds to play.  But, the Chargers turned the ball over, fouling Tristan Rogers in order to stop the clock.  Rogers missed on the front end of a one-and-one, allowing one final possession for the home team but Evan Steward's triple as the clock expired was off the mark, allowing the Hounds to escape with the victory.

Gugino led all players with 33 points.  Brock led the Hounds with 22 points and five assists while Justin Barnard added 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Greyhounds continue their road trip, heading to Saginaw Valley State for a Wednesday non-conference affair with the Cardinals.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
