Greyhounds advance to conference tourney semis

INDIANAPOLIS - The top-seeded University of Indianapolis volleyball team impressed an energetic crowd at the Ruth Lilly Center on Friday, opening its Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament with a 3-0 sweep over Southern Indiana (30-23, 30-21, 30-16). UIndy's offense was lethal in the win, generating a .379 hitting percentage, including a blistering .514 clip in the match's final game.

UIndy (31-2) jumped out to an early lead in the opening game and unearthed a margin as large as nine in taking the first game, 30-23. The Hounds offense was clicking, producing 22 kills to garner a .340 hit percentage.

Game two saw more of the same as the Hounds trailed only after the first point before rallying to command a 7-3 margin en route to the 30-21 win. USI struggled to a -.023 attack percentage while UIndy hit at a .308 clip in the second game.

The Screaming Eagles lept out to a 4-2 edge in the final game before the Hounds rattled off six of the next seven points to force a timeout. The UIndy lead hovered around four points until the offense stepped on the gas, outscoing USI 16-6 to closeout the game and the match.

Four different Greyhounds registered double-digit kill totals, led by senior Casey Chrzastowski's 14-kill effort. Freshman Lyndsay Callahan added a dozen, Elizabeth Shuyler had 11 and Cheneta Morrison chipped-in 10. Beth Robbins contributed 50 helpers in the win while Kyleigh Turner had 23 digs.

The Greyhounds have now advanced to the league tourney's semifinals in each of the past six seasons, the longest current string in the conference. Rockhurst, a 3-2 winner over Northern Kentucky on Friday, will face the Greyhounds on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Ruth Lilly Center.

Notes: Lewis, SIU Edwardsville and Rockhurst all won in their quarterfinal matches, setting up the same final four from last year's tournament ... Kyleigh Turner became the school's new single-season dig record holder, surpassing Kristen Lay's mark of 613, set back in 2003.
