Cockerham leads Hounds to consolation win in holiday tourney

Box score

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-  Junior point guard Tyke Cockerham (pictured) poured in 17 points, his highest output as a Greyhound, helping UIndy to a hard-fought 80-76 non-conference win against West Virginia State in the consolation game of the Queen's University Holiday tournament Sunday.  Senior DeAndre Brock totaled a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds in the win for Indianapolis.

UIndy (7-1) roared out to a fast start, piling-up an 18-2 lead in the game's first minutes.  The lead evaporated just as quickly, however, as WVSU (4-6) responded with a 21-5 run to knot the score at 23-apiece.  With two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the half and a 30-29 UIndy lead, junior Donald Cloutier came off-the-bench to make an impact in helping the Greyhound lead grow to eight prior to the break.  Cloutier knocked down a triple in the first possession, added an offensive board, an assist and another bucket, part of his season-high 10 points.  The effort punctuated the junior transfer's best game to date in a Greyhound uniform, as Cloutier did his damage in just seven minutes of action.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets chipped away at the lead, but never took the lead until Jason Slay's triple with 5:18 remaining gave WVSU a two-point advantage at 70-68.  There, the score would be retied on several occasions before the Hounds took their final lead and made it stick.  Tristan Rogers knocked down a pair from the free throw line with just over a minute remaining and followed with two more in the closing seconds to seal the deal.

Four different Greyhounds were in double digits in scoring, led by Brock's 21.  Cockerham had 17, Justin Barnard 15 and Cloutier had 10 for the Greyhounds.

UIndy will break until a Dec. 28 showdown with the second-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers, who will travel to Nicoson Hall in a non-conference tilt.  Tip time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
