Brock helps UIndy to road victory

Warren Central grad pours in a season-high 26

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The University of Indianapolis used 18 second-half points from junior DeAndre Brock to overtake and hold off a hot-shooting Kentucky Wesleyan squad, defeating the Panthers, 72-67, in an important road win.  KWC hit an impressive 12-of-22 attempts from behind the arc, but it was not enough to overcome the Greyhounds’ timely buckets and 14-for-16 effort from the stripe.

As the GLVC’s second best three-point shooting team, the Panthers (11-11, 4-11 GLVC) came out firing, connecting on seven of their first eight shots, including five triples, to take a 21-8 advantage.  The Greyhounds hung around by forcing nine turnovers in the next ten minutes, slowly trimming the margin and eventually lowering it to a single point, resulting in a 34-33 score at the half.  The Hounds shared the wealth in the first stanza, as six players scored between four and eight points.

Thanks to a short jumper from Justin Barnard on the first possession of the second half, Indianapolis would take its first lead of the game.  It would last all of 13 seconds, however, as the Panthers answered with a bucket from Rodney Edgerson.  Edgerson finished with 18 points and six boards.

Aside from the occasional tie, KWC would stay ahead of UIndy for the next six minutes, aided mostly by its continued hot shooting.  From the start of the second, five more threes from Panther players would drop before their next long-range miss.  UIndy finally recaptured the lead at the 13:47 mark, as a 25-footer from Brock made the score 47-46.

The Greyhounds held the advantage for the final 9:24, never leading by more than six.  KWC cut the deficit to one with a minute-and-a-half left, but Brock hit six free throws in the final 43 seconds to ice the win.

Along with Brock, the Greyhound leaders included Jordan Barnard, who added 12 points and Braxton Mills, who chipped in ten points and five rebounds.  Senior Scott Strahm had another solid game at the point, assisting on eight baskets without a turnover.  The Panthers were led by junior transfer Jeff Fahnbulleh, who tallied 19 points and eight rebounds.

UIndy (12-9, 8-6 GLVC) continues its road swing against divisional opponents as it travels to Wisconsin-Parkside on Feb. 15 for a 8:30 pm tip.  The Hounds look to avenge a Feb 3 loss when the Rangers fended off a late rally for a 72-67 win at Nicoson Hall.
