Box scoreGREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Though the Greyhounds traveled south for their season opener, the University of Indianapolis softball team couldn’t escape the snow. A possible comeback was thwarted by wintry weather as the Tusculum Pioneers, now 5-0 on the season, defeated the Greyhounds, 5-1. With one Greyhound on and one in during the sixth inning, the game was stopped and later called due to wet field conditions.
After a lead-off walk, sophomore
Lindsey Gustine swiped second as the Greyhounds looked to push an early run past the home team in the second. However, back-to-back K’s helped to end the threat, two of eight Hounds’ strikeouts on the day.
After a scoreless first, the Pioneers were able to break through in the game’s second inning. Aided by three walks and a throwing error, Tusculum scored three runs on just one hit to take the early lead. UIndy’s fielding mistakes proved costly as another Greyhound throwing error allowed two more Pioneer runs to score in the fifth.
With one out in the sixth, the Hounds offense finally awoke. Freshman
Jessica Breeden drove the ball to center for a triple and later scored on a
Colleen Roach single. The weather would not cooperate, however, as Roach’s at bat was the last of the game.
Amanda Wendlinger picked up the loss by allowing five runs, though just one was earned. Both Breeden and Roach managed two hits while Gustine was 1-for-1 with two walks.
UIndy (0-1, 0-0 GLVC) is scheduled to face Lincoln Memorial on Sunday, Feb. 18, weather permitting.
