INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Visiting Northern Kentucky took advantage of a sluggish Greyhound start en route to a 68-60 win over the Greyhound men at Nicoson Hall on Saturday night. NKU held the Hounds to just 18 first-half points.
UIndy mustered just nine points in the first 16 minutes, allowing Northern Kentucky to build a 15-point lead. Justin Barnard (pictured) hit a turnaround deuce as the Hounds began to chip away at the deficit.
A Keith Radcliff triple followed by a putback by Scott Strahm and another Barnard jumper put the score at 28-18, to help the Hounds close it to 10 at the end of the half.
The Hounds would slice the margin to eight on several different occasions, but could not make a dent into the Norse lead until Barnard connected on a one-hander in the paint to draw within five at 56-51. But, a steal and a breakaway dunk followed by a pair of techincal free throw makes pushed the advantage back to nine.
With the lead trimmed to four, 64-60, Barnard swatted Steven Wright's layup and the Greyhounds went the other way with a chance to close it to one. Brock's triple try from the right wing was just off the mark and NKU dodged a huge bullet.
The game remained within reach down the stretch thanks to three straight Norse free throw misses. But, the Hounds could not completely close the gap, falling 68-60.
Barnard led the Hounds with 16 points while Braxton Mills recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Three NKU players scored in double figures led by 15 from Kevin Schappell. Wright added 14 and Vincent Humphrey added 12 for the Norse.
The Greyhounds end their season with a record of 13-13 overall, 9-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
