Russell wins both ends of home-opening doubledip

Game 1: UIndy 8, Rockhurst 2
Game 2: UIndy 5, Rockhurst 0

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-  Freshman Megan Russell (pictured) won both ends of a doubleheader as the Greyhound softball team opened its Great Lakes Valley Conference and home schedule with an 8-2 and 5-0 sweep over visiting Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon.  Russell squandered just two runs in 14 innings pitched, helping UIndy to the sweep.

Game one featured the UIndy offense.  After Russell gave up a double to leadoff the game, she battled back to strike out the side.  In the bottom half of the inning, Jessica Breeden stroked a run-scoring double off the centerfield fence for a quick 1-0 UIndy advantage.

The Hawks got it back in the second when Heather Robertson connected for a solo homer.   But, UIndy struck for two in the second and another in the third and put the game away in the fourth with three runs for a 7-2 lead and would go on to an 8-2 victory in the opener.

Breeden was 3-for-4 in game one, part of 14 Greyhound hits in the opening game.  Seven different Hounds crossed the plate in the balanced attack.  Russell struck out seven in the opener.

In the nightcap, Russell allowed just two Rockhurst hits in seven innings of work, garnering her sixth win of the young season.   Russell also added an RBI double in a two-run fifth inning to aid in the victory.  She finished with two RBI as the Greyhounds rapped out seven hits in game two and took advantage of three Hawk miscues.

UIndy (12-5, 2-0 GLVC) will host Missouri-Rolla on Sunday at Baumgartner Field.  First pitch is slated for noon.
