Game 1: SVSU 5, UIndy 2
Game 2: SVSU 1, UIndy 0
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Visiting Saginaw Valley State handed the Greyhound softball team a sweep in a non-conference twinbill at Baumgartner Field on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinal pitching staff held the Hounds to just a pair of runs in the doubleheader sweep.
In the first game, a bases-loaded single followed by a double plated three Saginaw runs in the second inning for an early SVSU advantage. The Cards tacked on two more in the fourth on Stacy Kraatz' homer to deep centerfield for a 5-0 SVSU lead at that point.
Kraatz squandered just two hits through the first four innings, holding the potent Greyhound offense at bay until the seventh inning, when the Hounds made their push.
Colleen Roach singled up the middle on the first pitch of the seventh. Megan Russell followed with another single and the Hounds were in business. UIndy got two runs on Julie Zaitz's pinch-hit single back up the box but she was left stranded and Saginaw picked up the 5-2 win in game one.
Roach and Russell each had a pair of hits in the opening game. Amanda Wendlinger was saddled with the loss, allowing a season-high 10 hits while striking out six.
Game two saw a pitcher's duel through the first three innings. SVSU scratched across a single run in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout and made it hold up. The Hounds were held to just three hits for the entire game and failed to get a runner past second base.
The Hounds' best chance came in the seventh inning when Roach laced a double to the leftcenterfield gap to leadoff the inning. UIndy (13-8) could not advance the runner, however, and SVSU escaped with the win, 1-0.
Courtney Smith was saddled with the loss in the second game, despite allowing just four hits and one earned run. Smith struck out six and walked just one in the loss.
The Greyhounds return to conference play next Saturday when they head to Owensboro, Ky. for a pair against Kentucky Wesleyan.
Notes: Roach has each hit safely in all six home games so far this season ... UIndy averaged 5.6 runs scored per game heading into Saturday.
