Hounds snap four-game skid with 5-3 win at KWC

Game 1: Kentucky Wesleyan 3, UIndy 0
Game 2: UIndy 5, Kentucky Wesleyan 3

OWENSBORO, Ky.-  The Greyhound softball team rallied for a 5-3 win after a 3-0 loss at Kentucky Wesleyan in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday afternoon.  The win in the second game put the brakes on a four-game UIndy skid.

Three singles and two walks helped KWC (14-14, 3-7 GLVC) score three first-inning runs in the opener, holding the UIndy offense off the scoreboard to earn the win.  The Greyhounds' best chance came in a two-out rally in the second inning.  A walk followed by back-to-back singles put the wheels in motion, but the third out was recorded on the basepaths and the Panthers escaped the inning unscathed.

The Hounds produced just four hits off KWC starter Haley Ashworth, who struck out seven but also walked five in the win.  Her counterpart, Amanda Wendlinger, settled down after the shaky first inning, allowing just two more hits the rest of the way.

In game two, the Panthers again took an early lead with a single run plated in the bottom of the first frame.  The Hounds answered, though, in the top of the next inning on the strength of four straight singles to knot the score at 1-all.   UIndy (14-9, 4-2 GLVC) got a pair of unearned tallies in the fourth inning when Wendlinger reached on an inning to start the inning and Colleen Roach and Lauren Booten each added RBI singles to give the Hounds a 3-1 lead.

The Panthers posted single runs in each of the next two innings to retie the score heading into the final inning.  Booten doubled and later scored on Megan Russell's single, who came around herself on a wild pitch for a 5-3 Greyhound advantage.

Wendlinger, who recorded the final out of the sixth inning to snuff a KWC rally, got three flyouts in the seventh to earn the victory.  Russell returned to the pitching circle for the first time in two weeks, went 5.1 innings, scattering six hits and four walks while striking out a pair.  Russell, Booten, Roach and Julie Zaitz all had two hits in the second game, leading a UIndy hit parade that racked-up 11 hits.

The Greyhounds head home for an eight-game homestand, beginning with a Tuesday non-conference doubleheader against Hillsdale College.  First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
