Game 2: Saint Joseph's 2, UIndy 1
RENSSELAER, Ind.- The Saint Joseph's pitching staff held the Greyhound offense at bay in a doubleheader sweep in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday. The Pumas tamed the Hounds to the tune of just six hits and one run in 14 innings.
UIndy (22-15, 9-7 GLVC) starter Amanda Wendlinger held SJC off the board until the sixth inning of the opening game as the Pumas scratched across a run on an RBI single with two aboard. SJC (23-17, 10-6 GLVC) starter Sara Somogyi picked-up her 10th shutout of the season when she closed out the seventh inning unscathed to pick up the 1-0 win.
The Hounds mustered just a pair of hits in the first game, one apiece from Jessica Breeden and Wendlinger.
In the nightcap, the Pumas scored a single run in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Greyhounds countered with an unearned tally in the fourth as back-to-back SJC errors plated Lauren Booten, who had singled with one out.
Greyhound starter Megan Russell (pictured) recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts, but it was not enough as Saint Joseph's held on for the win. Russell, who also went 2-for-3 at the plate, allowed just five hits, one walk and two runs in taking the loss.
UIndy will close out its home schedule this weekend, hosting Bellarmine and Northern Kentucky on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
