SIUE pitches its way past UIndy

Game 1: SIUE 5, UIndy 3
Game 2: SIUE 2, UIndy 0

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.-  SIU Edwardsville used outstanding pitching to hand visiting Indianapolis a doubleheader sweep, 5-3 and 2-0, in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday afternoon.  The Cougars' pitching staff combined to record 20 strikeouts in the two games to remain in second place in league play heading into the final day of the regular season.  UIndy, despite the losses, guaranteed itself a spot in the upcoming league tournament, set for May 4-6.

The #13 Cougars got out to a 5-0 lead in the opener, scoring runs in each of the first three innings.  UIndy's (25-18, 12-10 GLVC) fourth inning proved to be the best opportunity to stage a comeback.  With two outs, Megan Russell and Colleen Roach (pictured) each singled to start the rally.  Freshman Jessica Breeden drove them both in with a double and later scored on Lindsay Maraldo's base knock, the fourth straight Greyhound hit.

SIUE would allow just one more hit the rest of the game, however, holding on for the 5-3 win.  Roach and Amanda Wendlinger each had a pair of hits in the opener to lead the offense.

In the second game, the hits were more scarce as Kaitlin Colosimo squandered only an infield hit in earning the complete game shutout.  She struck out eight Greyhound batters and induced 10 ground outs, allowing just one ball into the outfield, a lineout to the left fielder off the bat of Lauren Booten.

Russell took the loss in the second game, giving up just four hits.  She pitched six innings, struck out four and walked four in the loss with both runs coming in the decisive fifth inning.

Roach was the lone Greyhound to etch a hit in game two, giving her hits in her past five games, the third such streak of the season.  She had a season-long 12-gamer from Mar. 17- Apr. 7 and a nine-game streak from Mar. 3-13.

The Greyhounds will play their final series of the regular season on Sunday, heading to Southern Indiana to play a doubleheader with the Screaming Eagles.  USI finds itself a half-game behind the Hounds in the GLVC standings as the teams jockey for positioning in next week's league tournament.
