Miscues lead to USI wins in regular season finale

EVANSVILLE, Ind.-  The Greyhound defense chalked up nine errors, helping host Southern Indiana to a doubleheader sweep, 8-1 and 6-5, in the regular season finale on Sunday.  An unearned run in the 12th inning propelled USI to the win in the nightcap, giving the Eagles the No. 5 seed in next weekend's Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament and slipping UIndy to the eighth and final seed.

USI (29-22-1, 13-11-1 GLVC) scored in five of six innings for an 8-1 win in the opener.  The Screaming Eagles garnered unearned tallies in each of the first and second innings before a two-spot in the third for a 4-0 advantage at that point.  UIndy's (25-20, 12-12) lone run came in the top of the fourth when Lauren Booten homered to left field, her sixth of the season.

The Greyhounds ended game one with four miscues and gave up three unearned runs in the loss.   Booten had a homer and a double in the opener.

Game two saw USI again take a commanding lead, scoring three in the first inning followed by single runs in the third and fifth for a 5-0 margin.  But, the Greyhound offense exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score.  The Hounds batted around in the inning with the first four reaching base consecutively.  Colleen Roach started the rally, getting aboard via error.  Lindsay Maraldo doubled before Lindsey Gustine drove in the first run with an infield single.  After Julie Zaitz walked to load the bases, Jessica Breeden doubled to score two more.   Amanda Wendlinger drove in another pair with a single to left center to tie the game.

The game remained 5-5 all the way until the 12th inning when an error and a passed ball helped give the Eagles an unearned run and the sweep.

Megan Russell threw the entire second game, firing 11.2 innings with three earned runs and nine strikeouts.  Breeden had three hits in the nightcap while Wendlinger, Gustine, Roach and Zaitz each had a pair.

UIndy draws top-seed Lewis in the opening round of the double-elimination league tournament, set to begin on Fri., May 4 in East Peoria, Ill.  The Greyhounds and Flyers tangle at noon Central time on Field A at EastSIde Center Complex.
