Hounds rally for doubledip split

Game 1: Wayne State 4, UIndy 0
Game 2: UIndy 8, Wayne State 1

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-  Wayne State's pitching staff cooled the Greyhounds' bats in the opener, but UIndy reheated in the nightcap for a doubleheader split in non-conference action at Baumgartner Field on Monday.  After failing to get a hit in the opener, UIndy roared back for three homers and eight runs in game two to salvage the split.

The opening game belonged to Molly Yetman, who cooled off the Greyhound bats to the tune of 17 strikeouts without allowing a hit.  Only Lindsay Maraldo's hit by pitch kept it from being a perfect game.

The top of the Warrior lineup did the damage, as the one through four hitters collected six of the team's seven hits with all four runs and RBIs.  Lindsey Perry and Sarah Kish each homered in the opener for WSU.

Game two had a different feel, punctuated on the very first pitch of the bottom of the first when Amanda Wendlinger (pictured) smacked a solo homer to right center to tie the score 1-apiece.  Wendlinger's big hit, however, came in the next inning, when she smashed a grand slam over the same right centerfield wall for a 5-1 UIndy lead.

The WSU bullpen did not fare much better as the first pitch to Megan Russell in the bottom of the third was deposited over the fence in centerfield to make it 6-1.  The Hounds got a pair of runs in the fifth as well, notching back-to-back doubles by Russell and Lauren Booten, followed by an RBI knock from Kathy Blanchard.

Russell threw a complete game in the second game, allowing just four hits and one earned run with four strikeouts.  Russell, Booten and Wendlinger all two hits in the nightcap.

UIndy (18-11) heads to the University of Findlay on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader with the Oilers.  First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
