INDIANAPOLIS - For the second time in as many weeks, the University of Indianapolis volleyball team defeated a ranked team at the Ruth Lilly Center. After beating #22 Northern Kentucky last weekend, the Hounds topped 12th-ranked Southern Illinois Edwardsville (28-30, 30-26, 30-21, 30-18) in a four-game match on Saturday.
UIndy (17-1, 8-0 GLVC) dug itself an early hole by scoring just two of the match's first nine points. SIUE looked sharp through the early going, but with the score 20-12 in favor of the visitors, the Hounds made a run. UIndy orchestrated a 16-9 rally to cut the margin to a single point. However, the Cougars managed to hit the 30-point mark first to survive the scare.
Game two was even throughout as the teams battled to 20 ties and five lead changes. With the score 24-22 SIUE, UIndy again managed another late run, but this time the Hounds took the game. An 8-2 run by UIndy ensured a 1-1 tie going in the third game.
The Hounds rode that momentum through the next two games as they held their ranked opponent to 21 points and 18 points in games three and four, respectively. SIUE (14-5, 7-2 GLVC) was limited to a negative hitting percentage for both games to finish the match at a meager .100 as a team.
Two Hounds notched double-doubles on the day as senior
Casey Chrzastowski (23 kills, 11 digs) and freshman
Lyndsay Callahan (14 kills, 15 digs) both turned the trick. Junior setter
Beth Robbins tallied a season-high 61 assists while adding eight digs and three block assists.
Cheneta Morrison killed 15 balls and hit at a .355 clip and
Kyleigh Turner totaled 24 digs. Senior
Elizabeth Shuyler managed eight total blocks, a personal best in her one-and-a-half years at UIndy. The sum included three solo blocks with all three coming in an eight-point span in the final game.
After five straight home matches, UIndy hits the road for a three-game stretch starting with Quincy on Oct. 4.
