QUINCY, Ill.- Two days after scoring a season-low 50 points in a loss at SIU Edwardsville, the Greyhounds, behind senior DeAndre Brock, busted loose for a season-best point total in a 96-87 win at Quincy Saturday afternoon. Brock nearly outdid Thursday's team total himself, scoring a career-high 42 points, including eight three-pointers, in the highest scoring output by a Great Lakes Valley Conference player this season.
Brock was hot from the start, but finished even stronger to help UIndy (11-5, 5-3 GLVC) run-off 12 straight points in a crucial stretch to erase a four-point deficit. With 3:36 to play, Quincy (6-9, 0-7) owned a four-point lead and looked determined to etch its first league win of the season. A pair of Brock traditional three-point plays were the springboard to the run, with the senior scoring ten of the points in the span which lasted a little over two minutes. Six of his points were scored from the free throw line, part of his perfect 12-for-12 day, extending his consecutive streak of makes to 29.
Brock made good on his first four triple tries, all coming in the first eight minutes, but UIndy still found itself down a bucket, 21-19. A three by Keith Radcliff finally gave the Hounds their first lead at 26-25, but it would be short-lived as the Hawks regained a five-point edge at 35-30.
From that point, the Hounds rattled off ten straight points, punctuated with Brock's fifth and sixth long balls. The Greyhounds went into the lockerroom with a two-point cushion, 40-38. At the half, Brock had 18 points, all coming from behind the arc.
In the second half, the senior guard did a good share of his damage from 15 feet, sinking all 12 free throws he attempted. He also hit two more triples en route to 24 second-half points. He would get help from freshman Tyler Kitchel, who scored 11 second-half points, including back-to-back threes to help shave away a seven-point Hawk lead with eight minutes to play.
Andre Muse entered Saturday as the Hawks' leading scorer, but had just six points with four minutes remaining in the game. A three-pointer at the 3:36 mark would give him nine, but nothing further as the Hounds and Brock wrestled control of the game seconds later.
Three other Greyhounds still managed to etch double digits on UIndy's highest team point total in nearly three years (96- Feb. 2, 2005 vs. Missouri-St. Louis). Reed Ludlow scored 13 and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in 33 minutes of work off-the-bench. Kitchel added 11 and Tyke Cockerham dropped-in 10 points for the Greyhounds. Brock tallied a career-best five steals in the contest.
QU was led by Austin Chapital, who recorded 23 points and seven rebounds.
The Greyhounds return home for its next two contests, hosting Rockhurst and Drury on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Thursday's tip is slated for 7:30 p.m.
