INDIANAPOLIS- Grand Valley State escaped with a pair of close dual wins in action at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center pool Saturday. The Laker women were victorious 127-110 while the men pulled out a slim 120-117 edge in closely contested results.
The women's 400 medley relay was victorious, picking up the win in 4:03.52. Senior Ellie Miller won the 1000 freestyle, touching in 10:55.33, and was the top finisher in the 500 freestyle with a 5:17.28 time. Isabela Tafur won the 200 freestyle in a 1:57.81 time and later also won the 100 freestyle (52.80), the latter giving her an NCAA B-cut. Valerie Crosby etched a 24.71 time in winning the 50 freestyle sprint, missing the B-cut standard by just one-hundredth of a second. Katie Murray was the 200 breaststroke champion, winning in 2:33.11. The women closed their portion of the dual with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:35.22).
Hanno Ahonen won the 1000 freestyle, winning in 9:45.17, an NCAA-qualifying mark. He later won the 500 free as well, with a 4:44.70 time. Alex Arestis was the runaway winner in the 200 freestyle, touching in an NCAA B-cut time of 1:41.24. He was also victorious in the 100 freestyle with his 45.68 clocking, an NCAA A-cut. Marios Panagi (pictured) blitzed past the competition in the 50 freestyle, recording a 21.39 time, good for an NCAA B time standard. Chad Damitz won the 200 backstroke, touching in 1:57.04. The meet came to a close with UIndy winning the 400 freestyle relay (3:08.81).
The UIndy men head to Wabash next Saturday while the Hounds women break until the final GLIAC dual, a Feb. 2 meeting against Lewis at Ruth Lilly Fitness Center pool.
