SOMERS, Wis.- Senior DeAndre Brock scored all 15 of his team-high point total in the second half and Braxton Mills (pictured) added some late-game heroics to lead the University of Indianapolis past host Wisconsin-Parkside, 63-60, Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The win was the first by an opponent in the Rangers' home gym this season (1-6).
The teams traded leads in a tightly-contested first half that saw six lead changes and eight ties. UWP (7-4, 0-3 GLVC) scored the last five points of the stanza to break a 26-26 tie, giving the Rangers the largest lead of the half.
UIndy (9-2, 3-0) quickly regained the lead by scoring the first seven points of the second half for a slim two-point advantage. UW-P would go on an 8-0 run midway through the period to take control, stretching its lead to as many as nine with eight minutes to go.
11 straight Greyhound points turned the tides yet again as UIndy kept the Rangers without a make from the field for nearly six minutes.
With the score tied at 54-apiece, Mills flushed down an emphatic two-handed slam dunk off a Myron Jackson miss to give the Hounds the momentum and a two-point edge. LaVontay Fenderson answered with a jumper, however, to knot the score at 56-56 with a minute to play. On the ensuing Greyhound possession, Mills grabbed another offensive board but was fouled by Brad Ferstenou, sending the junior to the line with :45 remaining.
Mills calmly knocked down both freebies, then tipped a Ferstenou miss to Jackson who was fouled. Jackson's charity tosses gave UIndy a four-point cushion with 31 seconds left, but the Rangers would not go quietly.
Tyrone Deacon drew his defender in the air and was fouled on a three-point attempt with 15 seconds remaining for the Rangers' final hope. Deacon made two of the three free throws and UWP was back to within a bucket.
UIndy was clutch from the charity stripe down the stretch, making 7-of-8 from the line in the final minutes to seal the win. The Hounds and Northern Kentucky remain tied for first place in the GLVC East Division standings as the lone unbeatens in the East.
Three different Greyhounds were in double figures in scoring as Brock poured-in 15, Tyke Cockerham added 11 and Jackson 10 for UIndy. Justin Barnard grabbed nine boards to help the Greyhounds win the rebounding battle, 41-35.
The Greyhounds remain on the road and will battle Lewis University on Saturday afternoon. Tip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Eastern time.
