INDIANAPOLIS- In the last of straight three days of home matches, the 22nd-ranked University of Indianapolis volleyball team made quick work of visiting Missouri S&T with a 25-19, 25-13, 25-22 win at the Ruth Lilly Center Saturday afternoon. Excluding a 2-1 deficit early in the first set, UIndy (18-4, 7-2 GLVC) never trailed in the straight-set victory, its 13th sweep of the season.
The Greyhounds were at their most dominant in the first half of set number two. Sophomore
Lyndsay Callahan and junior
Jessica Breeden each served five straight times in the early going to help UIndy build a 13-3 lead. During the latter part of Breeden’s service turn, freshman
Abby Merritt was set up four straight times, killing three balls before picking up one of her mere four attack errors on the day.
The third set became a little hairy towards the end as S&T (4-16, 2-8) pulled with in one late. The Greyhound led by as much as nine, but with the score 20-12, the Lady Miners made a 10-4 run in hopes of extending the match. UIndy would not oblige, however, as the Hounds scored the next two points to slam the door.
Statistically, Merritt had the best match of her young career. The Lawrence North grad racked-up a .370 hitting percentage with team highs of 14 kills and 27 attack attempts while adding a personal-best nine digs.
Indianapolis heads west for its next two matches, starting with Drury on Thursday, Oct. 9.
