HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.- Northern Kentucky University said goodbye to its basketball gymnasium and may have bid farewell to UIndy's postseason chances in the process in a 70-57 win Saturday night at Regents Hall. The game was the final regular season affair in the venue as the team moves into the brand new Bank of Kentucky Center next season.
UIndy (12-11, 6-9 GLVC) suffered its sixth straight setback as the host Norse jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. NKU (17-5, 11-4) ran out to a 14-1 lead, holding UIndy without a field goal until more than nine minutes into the contest, when Braxton Mills scored on a jumper. Greyhound leading scorer DeAndre Brock misfired on his first six shots before connecting on back-to-back threes to make the score 19-11.
The NKU lead grew to 20 as Anthony Teague beat the first-half buzzer with a bucket to give the Norse a commanding 38-18 advantage at the break. The Greyhounds mustered just six field goals in the opening stanza and shot 23.1 percent from the floor.
Five minutes into the second half, the gap widened to 25 points with NKU on top 49-24, for its largest lead of the night. The Greyhounds managed to chip away at the lead, getting as close as 11 in the final minutes but the Norse proved to be too much, holding on for the 70-57 victory.
Three different Norse players were in double digits in scoring led by 19 from center Travis Rasso, who made 7-of-8 shots from the field. UIndy was again led by Brock, who tallied 12 points and six rebounds. Myron Jackson added 11 points and six boards while Mills had eight points in just 13 minutes of work for the Hounds.
The final four games on the schedule for UIndy are set for the friendly confines of Nicoson Hall. The Greyhounds currently sit four games back of the final GLVC playoff berth with four to play. Following a tough five-game stretch on the road, the Hounds will face four straight GLVC East opponents at home, beginning with Lewis on Thursday. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
