INDIANAPOLIS- Wisconsin-Parkside had four players in double figures scoring to lead the Rangers past the UIndy men's basketball team, 77-72, at Nicoson Hall Saturday afternoon. The loss officially eliminates the Greyhounds from Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament consideration.
UIndy (13-12, 7-10 GLVC) jumped out to a 7-2 lead early, showing little ill effects from a triple-overtime contest just two nights prior. UWP (14-11, 7-10) battled back, however, and took a brief one-point advantage.
DeAndre Brock hit his second triple in a two-minute span to stretch a Greyhound lead out to eight with 9:24 to play in the first half. The lead would change hands five times and the game was tied on five more occasions in a see-saw opening stanza. Tyrone Deacon's buzzer-beating triple gave UWP a 37-35 edge at intermission.
UWP held onto its lead for the bulk of the second half, stretching it to as many seven. The Hounds made several attempts to retake the lead, but could never quite surpass the visitors. A triple from Justin Barnard (pictured) trimmed the margin to a single point with just under five minutes remaining.
The Rangers answered with three straight layups to effectively put the game in the book. A Barnard layup got it back to within three with 1:12 left, but the Hounds only got a single free throw make and a desparation Tyler Kitchel long ball in the closing minute.
Brock led all scorers with 19 points for Indianapolis. Barnard added 15 points and a team-high seven rebonds while Tyke Cockerham tallied 12 points in the loss. UWP was led by Brad Ferstenou's 18 points and 16 from Kyle Clark. LaVontay Fenderson and Tyrone Deacon chipped-in 14 and 12, respectively.
The Greyhounds will play the balance of their 2007-08 schedule at home with games vs. Saint Joseph's Tuesday and Kentucky Wesleyan Thursday. Tip time both nights is slated for 7:30 p.m.
