INDIANAPOLIS- Four Greyhounds scored in double figures to lead UIndy to a 74-70 win against St. Joseph's in GLVC play Tuesday night at Nicoson Hall. Senior Justin Barnard scored a game-high 20 points in the win.
Tristan Rogers and Tyke Cockerham pushed the Hounds out to the 11-2 early lead, combining for nine of UIndy’s first 11 points. Cockerham continued to bolster the Hounds, pushing the UIndy lead to 19-9 at the halfway point of the first half with another bucket and an assist on a three-point basket from Braxton Mills. DeAndre Brock added another trey to make the Hounds’ lead 10.
The Pumas would then go on a 13-4 run to cut the UIndy lead to one at the five-minute mark, 23-22. The Greyhounds answered back with an 11-4 run fueled by a trio of three-point baskets from Rogers, Myron Jackson (pictured) and Justin Barnard to push their lead back to eight.
UIndy’s lead was cut to five by the time the halftime buzzer rang, sending the teams into the break with the Hounds ahead 36-31.
St. Joseph’s tied the game at 40-40 about three minutes into the second half, on a layup from Ronald Coleman. UIndy reclaimed the lead about a minute later on a pair of three-point baskets from Barnard and a Brock steal and layup. Brock was fouled on the play and made good on the free throw to push the Greyhound lead back to nine.
The Hounds’ lead was cut to three just seconds later, however, on a pair of three-point makes by the Pumas. Rogers then pushed the advantage back to four with a dunk at the 13:30 mark, but St. Joseph’s would knot the score at 52-52 just less than two minutes later.
Rogers made good on a three-point play with just more than eight minutes to play to put the Hounds back on top by seven, 63-56. A fast-break layup by Brock a minute-and-a-half later would push the UIndy advantage to 10, matching the Hounds’ largest lead of the night.
A 9-0 Puma run brought the visitors within a point of the Hounds before buckets from Barnard and Cockerham pushed the UIndy lead back to five with just less than three minutes to play.
Austin Peebles trimmed the margin three, 70-67, with a minute to play on a dunk, but a Cockerham layup with 23 seconds on the clock pushed the Hound lead back to five. Will Jones hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds to bring the score to 72-70, but Barnard iced the UIndy win with a pair of free throws two seconds later.
Rogers tallied 15 points while Brock added a dozen and Cockerham 11. Jackson recorded a solid all-around effort, scoring seven points with a game-high nine rebounds and five assists.
The Hounds will return to the Nicoson hardwood Thursday night for Senior Night in their final regular season contest. UIndy will host Kentucky Wesleyan in a game set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
