EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The No. 24 University of Indianapolis volleyball team (12-3, 5-1 GLVC) used its ninth sweep victory of the season to defeat conference foe Southern Indiana, 25-22, 25-23, 25-20, at PAC Arena Tuesday night. UIndy used an efficient .314 team hitting percentage to down the Screaming Eagles in straight sets.
UIndy began by scoring the first three points of the match, with two coming on kills by freshman
Courtney Anglemyer. The Hounds upped the lead to five, but with the score 14-9, the Eagles (6-7, 1-4) ran off a 9-3 run to take their first lead. UIndy countered with a 7-1 rally to reclaim the lead at 24-19 and went on to take the set 25-22.
Freshman
Kristina Hefferan garnered the bulk of the Hounds’ offensive chances by killing seven of 13 first-set attempts.
After trailing 6-4 in the second, UIndy orchestrated an 8-2 run to take control. Later, with the Hounds up 21-15, USI again came back by scoring the next six points to knot it at 21 apiece. Hefferan stopped the rally with a kill and later was part of a double block with
Jessica Breeden that accounted for the set’s 25th and final point.
Cheneta Morrison started the match with seven straight zero attacks in the opening frame but pounded eight kills in 14 attempts in the second.
The Greyhounds went down 7-3 early in the third and final set but eventually surged to take a 13-10 advantage. Though the Eagles managed to tie it at 18, UIndy went on to close it out 25-20 to take the match.
Middle hitters Anglemyer (10 K, 1 E, 18 TA) and Breeden (9 K, 1 E, 16 TA) each compiled a match-high .500 hitting percentage. Morrison and Hefferan evenly combined for 22 kills with Morrison adding seven digs.
Beth Robbins totaled 40 assists while
Kyleigh Turner had 18 digs.
UIndy begins play at the Cal Vulcan Weekend Tourney in California, Pa. Sep. 26. The Hounds open the invite Friday morning by playing the nationally-ranked and undefeated host, the No. 13 California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans.
