UIndy opens conference slate with a “W”

Box score

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.- The University of Indianapolis volleyball team opened the 2008 Flyer Festival with a sweep win against Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Wisconsin-Parkside.  In the lone Thursday night match of the 10-team invitational, UIndy downed the Rangers 25-14, 28-26, and 25-20 at Neil Carey Arena on the campus of the Lewis University.  Sophomore Cheneta Morrison compiled a match-high 11 kills.

In the rare neutral-site conference match, UIndy (4-1, 1-0 GLVC) had little problems with UW-Parkside in the opening set.  Indianapolis not only out-scored the Rangers by 11 but also out-hit them .333 to .030.

Conversely, UW-Parkside (3-2, 0-1) pushed the Greyhounds to the limit and then some in the second set, but couldn’t cash in on either of its two set points.  With the score 26-25 Rangers, Morrison killed back-to-back balls just before junior Jessica Breeden put the set away with a service ace.

The third and final set saw Parkside build a 17-11 advantage as the Rangers looked to extend the match.  The Greyhounds would not oblige, however, as they would finish the set on a 14-3 run to earn the sweep.  The match-winning surge featured three kills apiece from freshman Abby Merritt and sophomore Lyndsay Callahan.

Morrison led all players with 11 kills while adding four digs and three block assists.  Other Hounds with match highs included Kyleigh Turner with 17 digs, Courtney Anglemyer with four blocks, and Beth Robbins with 25 assists.

UIndy continues play at the Flyer Festival with two matches Friday and two more Saturday.  The Hounds face a solid Nova Southeastern squad tomorrow at 1 pm before meeting Western New Mexico at 5:30 pm.  Click here to view the invitational's home page.
