ROMEOVILLE, Ill.- With two in-region wins at Neil Carey Arena today, the University of Indianapolis volleyball team concluded play at the 10-team Lewis University Flyer Festival with a 4-1 record. UIndy downed a pair of Michigan schools Saturday with a 3-2 win versus Northern Michigan (19-25, 25-23, 25-19, 16-25,15-6) and a sweep victory against Michigan Tech (25-20, 25-22, 25-20).
UIndy opened the day with its third straight five-set match. After dropping the first set to Northern Michigan 25-19, UIndy bounced back to win the next two. The Greyhounds won a see-saw battle in the second set, 25-23, after nine lead changes and 13 ties. Conversely, the third set featured just a single tie as the Hounds led nearly the whole way.
Despite six kills and no attack errors on 11 attempts from
Lyndsay Callahan, the Greyhounds managed just a .077 team hitting percentage in the fourth set. Four of the Hounds’ attack errors came on Wildcat blocks as NMU (5-3) extended the match with a 25-16 win.
The finale proved to be anti-climactic as the fifth set was all Greyhounds. UIndy held the ‘Cats to just six points while compiling a blistering .529 hitting percentage to notch its six win of the season.
Callahan finished with a .383 hitting percentage, a career-high 20 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Senior
Beth Robbins assisted on 48 kills and totaled 16 digs while
Kyleigh Turner added 31 digs.
UIndy’s fifth and final match at the Flyer Fest lacked the suspense of most of the previous contests. Just as they started the invitational with a sweep versus Wisconsin-Parkside, the Greyhounds wrapped up their stay in northern Illinois with a straight-set victory against Michigan Tech (5-3).
Though the win came in just over 90 minutes, the Huskies battled tough, especially in the second set. UIndy owned a commanding 20-10 lead before Tech went on an 11-2 run cut the deficit to one. But two MTU attack errors and a set-ending kill from
Jessica Breeden put the Hounds up 2-0.
Sophomore
Cheneta Morrison led the Greyhound offense in the deciding third set. The Fort Wayne, Ind. native killed seven balls on eleven attempts to help finish off the Huskies. Morrison finished the match with a robust .526 hitting percentage and a match-high 13 kills.
Callahan added 12 digs, Robbins had 33 assists and
Kristina Hefferan recorded three service aces.
Robbins and Callahan were each named to the 12-player All-Tournament Team. Robbins was one of two setters on the squad as she finished the three-day event with 205 assists and 48 digs. For Callahan, it was her second all-tourney nod in as many weeks. She averaged 2.6 kills and 3.3 digs per set in five matches.
