INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy men's basketball team lost a hard-fought 64-62 contest to GLIAC-foe Lake Superior State in Angus Nicoson Basketball Classic play Friday afternoon.
The Greyhounds (3-1) jumped out to a 10-5 lead early, but let the Lakers back into the ballgame after that. Lake Superior State (5-1) strung together a 15-4 run to claim a six-point lead with just more than 10 minutes to play in the first half.
A three-pointer from
Adrian Moss on the next possession brought the Greyhound back within three, and a trey from
Reece Cheatham about three minutes later tied the game. A fastbreak dunk from
Mikel Brigham put UIndy back in control, 22-20.
The Greyhounds didn't relinquish the lead for the rest of the half, heading into the intermission with a 26-25 lead. UIndy's defense held the Lakers to just two field goal makes in the final 10 minutes of the first stanza.
The Lakers took the lead back with 15:40 to play on a jumpber by Derek Billing. Prior to taking the lead, Lake Superior State tied the ballgame twice, erasing a three-point Greyhound lead.
The contest stayed tight through the middle of the second half, with neither team able to mount more than a three-point advantage.
Lake Superior rattled off seven straight unanswered points to take a 50-43 lead with 7:27 to play. A conventional three-point play from Brigham cut the Laker lead back to three, but those points were also negated by a three-ball from Billing on the next possession.
A pair of jumpers from Moss brought the Greyhounds back within three, but the Lakers scoring five straight points, mixed in with a couple of Greyhound turnovers, prompted a UIndy timeout with the scoreboard reading 58-50 in favor of LSSU.
The Greyhounds pulled within three with under a minute to play on a Moss three-ball and a made free throw from Brigham. A flurry of charity shots by both squads left the score at 64-62 in the Lakers' favor, and the Greyhounds with the ball.
Moss skyed through the lane, but was stripped on his way up, with the ball going out of bounds off of a Greyhound, giving LSSU the ball, and essentially the 64-62 victory.
Moss led UIndy with a game-high 23 points and eight assists. Brigham chipped in 19 points and 15 boards, while Cheatham had 12. Billing led the Lakers with 14 points and 10 rebounds on the day.
The Greyhounds look to rebound in continuing Angus Nicoson Classic play, hosting another GLIAC opponent in Northern Michigan in a 3:30 p.m. contest Saturday. Saint Joseph's and Lake Superior State will face off in the tournament's first game of the day at 1 p.m.
