ON TAP: The Greyhounds enter the 2011 NCAA Regional as the No. 2 seed out of the Midwest, and will take on No. 7 seeded Ashland in the first round of play. Joining No. 2 UIndy and No. 7 Ashland in the Midwest #2 Regional are No. 3 seed and host Saginaw Valley state, and No. 6 seed Northern Kentucky. See page four for a bracket of the Midwest #2 Regional.
UINDY V. ASHLAND: UIndy and Ashland did not meet in 2011 regular season play. The GLIAC-foe Eagles own an 8-11all-time series lead over the Greyhounds, and won the last meeting between the two teams, a 2-1, eight inning victory in 2009. The Greyhounds were scheduled to play Ashland last season, but the game was canceled. A look at UIndy and Ashland's records against like opponents this season:
UIndy Ashland

Southern Ind. 1-1 0-1

GREYHOUNDS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: UIndy is making its fourth consecutive NCAA Regional appearance during the 2011 event. The Greyhounds won the 2009 NCAA Regional, coincidentally at the home of their 2011 first-round opponent, Ashland. The 2009 Greyhounds went on to win the Super Regional, which was played at the SVSU Athletic Complex, the site of this year's Midwest #2 Regional. Last season, UIndy lost to Saginaw Valley State 3-0 (14 innings) and to Quincy 1-0 to bow out of NCAA play in the Regional.
LAST TIME OUT: The Greyhounds are coming off of a 1-2 showing in last weekend's GLVC Softball Championships. UIndy, the tournament's No. 4 seed, defeated No. 5-seeded Quincy 1-0 (8 innings) in the first round of play, but then lost to top-seeded Missouri-St. Louis 9-1 in the second round and to No. 8-seed Rockhurst 5-4 on day two.
GLVC AWARD WINNERS: Five UIndy softballers earned All-GLVC recognition for the 2011 season, including
Cori Eckerle being named the league's Freshman of the Year. Eckerle became the first Greyhound to win the award since
Megan Russell earned the honor in 2007. In all, three Greyhounds have earned the honor. Joining Eckerle on the All-GLVC First Team were
Kelsey Rummel and
Jennifer DeMotte, while
Jamie Keltz and
Lauren Edwards were named to the conference third team.
30-WINS...AGAIN: With their 3-1 win over Saint Joseph's Apr. 29, the Greyhounds secured their fourth consecutive 30+ win season. UIndy has won 30 or more in five of the last six seasons, with all five marks coming with
Melissa Frost-Fisher as the Greyhound head coach. Coming into the GLVC Tournament, Frost-Fisher's UIndy record stands at 233-185-1. She currently stands in second to Greyhound Athletic Director, and former softball coach, Dr. Sue Willey for wins by a UIndy softball coach. Here is a look at each of the 30-win seasons in UIndy softball history:
2011: 34-12-1 (still playing)
2010: 36-17
2009: 37-21
2008: 39-28
2006: 31-19
SENIORS KNOW HOW TO WIN: The current class of UIndy seniors (
Jessica Breeden,
Meagan Gutierrez and
Jamie Keltz) will leave the university as the winningest in Greyhound history. Coming into the 2011 NCAA Midwest Regional, Gutierrez and Keltz currently hold career records of 146-78-1, while Breeden has a record of 135-83-1* as a Greyhound.
*Breeden redshirted during the 2010 season
RE-WRITING THE RECORD BOOKS: Greyhound senior
Jamie Keltz has carved her place in UIndy softball history and will leave the program as one of the best players to ever don a UIndy uniform. The senior has busted three records this season, adding to the two she overtook a year ago. Keltz currently holds the UIndy career records for hits, homeruns, atbats, runs scored and stolen bases. The Greyhound secondbaseman is second in the listing for RBIs, and is in the top five in career doubles and triples. Her current career slugging percentage also has a place in the career top 10.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP: The young guns of the Greyhound lineup have packed a punch this season, with 167 of the team's 216 RBIs coming off the bats of the team's underclassmen. Seventy-two of the squad's 101 extra-base hits can also be attributed to the freshmen and sophomore classes, along with 186 of UIndy's 252 runs scored thus far on the year.
SOPHOMORE SENSATION: Jennifer DeMotte has had a steller season in her second year on the Greyhound roster, posting a 20-5 record in the circle to go with a .378 batting average. DeMotte is the lone GLVC softball player to appear in both the top ten in ERA and batting average, and became the first player since the 2006 season to earn both the GLVC's Player and Pitcher of the Week honors in the same week Apr. 25. In addition to the conference honor, DeMotte became the first-ever UIndy NFCA Division II National Pitcher of the Week Feb. 23.
In addition to her work on the diamond, DeMotte also gets it done in the classroom. The UIndy sophomore carries a 3.89 GPA in Entreprenuership, and earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District V second team for her hard work.
UINDY IN THE RANKINGS: The Greyhounds have found themselves in the NFCA Division II Top 25 11 of the first 13 weeks of the poll. UIndy debuted in the poll at No. 9 Feb. 23, after a 6-0 start to the season at the UAH Charger Chillout. The highest ranking of the year for the Greyhounds came in weeks four and five, when UIndy was No. 7 in the poll. Two other Midwest Region opponents appear in this week's edition of the poll along with the Greyhounds, who are at No. 20 this week, with Tiffin coming in at No. 18 and Lewis taking the No. 22 spot.
